Kawasaki disease

Kawasaki disease is characterized by inflamed blood vessels of the body,_and this leads to symptoms below:-The disease affects children under the age of 5,and rarely affects adults.

Causes:The exact cause is unknown,thought to be genetic,viral,bacterial,chemical irritants,or environmental cause.

Signs and symptoms

Reddened eyes,enlarged glands_especially on the neck,irritated throat and inner mouth,swollen bright red tongue(Strawberry tongue)diarrhoea and vomiting.

Few cases may complicate to dysrhythmia ,myocarditis,mitral valve regurgitation,vasculitis and death.

Treatment:

Pain relief and body temperature reduction using Aspirin,at high doses it is an anti inflammatory,in low doses it is an anti-coagulant.IV immunoglobulin infusion is transfused to boost immune system.Corticosteroids to reduce swelling can be given and cardiac surgery can sometimes required.

Nursing care:

The family need to know causes,presentation,complications of the disease and possible  treatment of the condition.

Monitor pain level and patient’s respond to analgesia,this include chest pain that may be due to heart heart complications.

Asses for signs of myocarditis like,tachycardia,gallop heart rate,chest pains and monitor for heart failure.

Monitor intake and output,by assessing patients weight,specific gravity and skin turgor.

Allow the child to alternate activities with undisturbed rest,allow her to play freely.

Provide oral care with soft brush,specialized oral swab,give soft food,cool liquids and ice.

Discharge health Education

Children and parents are advised to drink plenty of water,take treatment as prescribed,as Aspirin can cause Reye’s syndrome on kids.

They have to mind the check up date;echocardiogram scan can be taken to asses any heart problem,if the heart is fine,Aspirin can be stopped.
